This revolving bookcase was originally designed in 1904 for Hous’hill, a residence in Nitshill, Glasgow.
It is Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s only known revolving bookcase and was conceived for the drawing room.
The design follows an organic principle: the vertical divisions evoke the trunk and branches of a tree, multiplying at each shelf and terminating in small painted squares suggestive of blossoms or leaves.
This example is a later production produced in limited numbers by the Italian manufacturer Cassina in the 1970s.
